“Closed Mouths Don’t Get Fed” is all to do with speaking out for yourself and believing in your ability. To make yourself known of your chosen desires and to have the willingness of having vocalised what you want, to be persistent and powerful within the way you hold yourself, to communicate without fear, strive to be the best version of yourself. the grapes, represent abundance and fruitfulness, abundance is about gratefulness of having speech, being grateful of life and being able to express yourself through being your most authentic self. Erykah depicts vulnerability through her works, within her childhood she felt that she had goals and aspirations in life, but did not truly know how to express them. She felt that when she did not speak up for what she truly wanted, her vision and her authenticity was suppressed, leaving her astray. As Erykah has grown she learns that nothing is handed to you, that everything comes from thought, speech, action. To depict this in her painting is significant and means a lot to be telling her story.
